Poor pitch condition leads to SA hockey teams withdrawing from Africa Games in Ghana

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) have withdrawn the country’s hockey teams from the Africa Games in Ghana citing the poor condition of the playing surface.

South African officials were not happy that the conditions of the pitch was suitable for international hockey, and were worried over the safety of the players. South Africa’s officials had a consultation a specialist in sports surface laying, who did not feel that players would not be safe in they took part.

“They have also advised us – having analysed the images we shared with them – that the field is not satisfactory and may cause harm to the athletes,” South African team leader Patience Shikwambana said in a statement.
